AVI Mine Land Reclamation Projects

Since 1983, AVI has been extensively involved with the investigation, design and construction of mine land reclamation projects. This includes over 20 major projects with a total construction cost in excess of 150
million dollars.

Each year the Department of the Interior, Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM)
recognized outstanding reclamation projects throughout the nation.

AVI has been fortunate enough to receive this honor twice; 1) for the Silver Reef Reclamation Project in
Southern Utah, and 2) for the Shirley Basin Uranium District Project in Central Wyoming. The Shirley Basin
Uranium District Reclamation Project was a seven year, $35 million dollar project – one of the single largest
abandoned mine land projects in the country. Reclamation of this open pit uranium mine required 33 million cubic yards of earth movement and relocation of 3.2 miles of the
Little Medicine Bow River.

Since 1984 AVI has inventoried and prioritized over 2,000 abandoned mine sites. The most recent project involved
the statewide inventory of pproximately 800 abandoned mine sites for the State of Wyoming. All sites were mapped with Trimble GEO XM hand held GPS units. Data for each
site was logged in the GPS unit using a data dictionary developed specifically for the mine inventory. All field
collected information was exported to a final project data base developed in “Microsoft Access” prior to import into
the project final GIS deliverable.
